Before you assign your next research project, ask yourself is there another method that I can use to assess student learning other than a written report? If the answer is yes, then keep reading! Performance tasks are a great way to assess student learning. These types of tasks could be incorporated into a choice board. That way they can be cross out the projects they have used and have other choices left for their next project.
Make a “choice board” and include ideas and examples
Create a piece of art or model
Write a play, story, or poem
Create a comic strip
Record a song or rap
Lastly, think outside the box.
Here is a sample choice board, that I made, but you could easily adapt it to your students. There is a lot of room to add more ideas to the performance tasks choices or leave it as is.
You students may also have an idea of their own to demonstrate the have learned the information. These types of assessments require higher level skills and will engage student learning.
Use these resources to help with show expectations.
Create a piece of art or model
Explore and Draw Horses
Write a play, story, or poem
Our California
Create a comic strip
Surviving the Dust Bowl
Record a song or rap
Rodent Rap
There are many more resources available to you to incorporate into a sample for additional performance tasks. Your students will love having a variety in their end of unit assessments.
