The fundamental building blocks of reading are established at an early age. Reading to your child is important to develop a love of reading. Once they have developed this love then students need to develop early reading skills. These skills include sound recognition. Understanding that sounds make words, words make sentences and sentences make stories is helpful.  Student can create meaning as they read and not simply decoding words. Try these ideas with your younger children to develop the love reading and in turn a love for learning.  Typically in grades K-3 students are learning to read, then after they have mastered those necessary skills they are then reading to learn.  Students will enjoy a variety of topics that interest them and gain understanding in that particular subject area.

Ideas that Teach Early Literacy Skills

First, expose them to the read alouds within Big Universe.  Exposure to the classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes will build background knowledge.  I see references made to simple nursery rhymes and fairy tales daily.

Second, find resources that teach fundamental reading skills. I searched for word families and found great resources.  Try this with your early readers..

This book features the “at” word family and includes familiar images, word labels, direct picture-text match, and sight word vocabulary to help readers at Kindergarten reading level to develop phonemic awareness and phonic skills.

Lastly, find books written on their reading level to help students feel successful.  Once they have mastered these skills, let them select other books on their level and interests.

Young readers will learn about what some people consider to be the most beautiful wild cats in the world-Siberian tigers. Born in the bitter cold of Siberia in a safe hideaway of tall bushes or rocks, the cute little cubs of this species are well cared for by their mothers. They cuddle, lick, and nurse their babies and keep them safe. Through gorgeous pictures and simple text, readers will see how the babies learn all about hunting and living on their own in this coming-of-age introduction to tiger cubs.

When students have mastered the basics and are exposed to interesting books, you are creating a love of learning.  This love of learning will lead them to explore other ideas and topics throughout their lifetime.
